How to teach using examples of explanation writing.

Like all writing genres, explanation text follows specific structural patterns that are specific to its form. Maximise student outcomes by teaching this structure explicitly. Here are some explanation writing examples found in model texts:

• This style of writing is often written in the present tense and employs the use of formal language. This enables you as the writer to come across more sophisticatedly and suits the informative style.
• Time connectives, such as: first, then, next, later, and finally. This is important as it provides your writing with much need chronology, making it easier for the reader to follow.
• Technical vocabulary (sometimes in bold), for example: if the text is about a specific subject or topic, then it is important to include keywords that enhance the knowledge of the reader.
• A glossary to explain technical vocabulary, so your readers are able to navigate through words they may have not come across before.
